There are a multitude of aromatherapy classes
and certificate programs available for those who want to learn the basics about
aromatherapy as well as those who want to be serious practitioners.
The
Internet has had a lot to do with this. Not only are there online aromatherapy classes
available but many sites have calendars of events listing when and where you
can attend. As with any educational undertaking you should choose from classes
that cater most to your own particular want or need.
Learning to use essential oils is
serious since it affects people in so many ways. Be sure to make sure the
learning institution and/ or instructors are well-credentialed. Remember that
on page 13 we told you about two organizations with excellent credentials.
They
are the American Holistic Nurses Association (http://ahna.org)
and The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy or NAHA
(http://www.naha.org).
If you are looking
into aromatherapy classes or want to find out about a practitioner you’re considering
visiting, these sites would be a good place to check backgrounds.
Now that you’ve read this book
and are excited about aromatherapy,
it would be a good idea to give you a few ideas for how to get started. It’s a
big topic; there are hundreds of essential oils so where do you start? As you know by
know, there is a lot of testing and refining involved, but there are definitely
some essential oils
that you see in nearly every recipe. We suggest that you buy the
following to begin with:
- Lavender
- Chamomile
- Rosemary
- Tea tree
- Peppermint
- Lemon or one of the other citrus oils
- Geranium
These are all used for our most
common conditions either by themselves or in combination. With this group
you’ll be able to address infection, insomnia, depression, digestive upset,
relaxation, anger, frustration, pain, congestion, constipation, poor memory,
panic, itching, sinusitis, and most of all achieve a solid mind-body balance.
