Aromatherapy For Pets

As you read and do other research about aromatherapy you are bound to come across references to using essential oils on your pets. Once again, why not go natural when you are dealing with the four-legged creatures in your household.

There are some cautions to be aware of, as with all essential oil use. Remember that your cats and dogs clean themselves with their tongues. For that reason you want to use only oils that are recommended for use on animals, and the dilutions must be much greater. Consider the amount that you would use on a small child, usually around 50% dilution of essential oil to carrier oil.

We have some recipes that you can use in bathing your pet and in their sleeping area. These formulas will kill the fleas so you won’t see any jumping off the animal. It’s a good idea to repeat the shampoo a few days after the first bath to make sure you also kill the eggs they are sure to have left behind. If you have an indoor pet and he or she has a large number of fleas, you will also need to vacuum thoroughly and then spray with cedarwood.

Don’t ever put essential oils directly on your pet’s skin. After the flea bath you can put a few drops of oil on a collar. By the way, flea treatment will also eliminate ticks.

Some natural flea repellants are:

  • Bay
  • Camphor
  • Cedarwood
  • Citronella
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lemon
  • Pennyroyal

Text Box: Not only will you benefit from aromatherapy but your family pets may enjoy a little aromatherapy as well.
