The Pleasures of Safe Aromatherapy

Depression

Essential oils are referred to often when researchers, practitioners, and those who believe in them talk about them. They have a tremendous impact on our emotional selves. Our chart addresses only a few conditions, but the list is actually quite long.

Europeans are ahead of the United States when it comes to using essential oils. The University of Warwick, in central England has long been conducting olfactory studies, including the link to depression. During his lifetime, the Frenchman Paolo Rovesti successfully treated a number of patients for depression.

Many people today suffer from depression and either turn to medications that chemically alter the brain, or just try to tough it out. The trouble is depression can go on for years, in fact for an entire lifetime. We don’t want to discourage anyone on medication to throw it out, but we would recommend talking to a natural healer about possibly trying some essential oils. If you are mildly depressed it might be worth it to try some of the oils after careful study and the assurance that you’re getting a pure essence.

Here are some essential oils used in aromatherapy for those suffering from depression:

  • bergamot
  • clary sage
  • geranium
  • grapefruit
  • jasmine
  • lavender
  • lemon
  • lemon verbena
  • melissa
  • neroli
  • orange
  • petitgrain
  • sandalwood
  • tangerine
  • ylang-ylang
