The Pleasures of Safe Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy Guide Image

Here are some of the highlights:

  • In 1996 the aromatherapy market was $316 million, in 2001 it was $454 million
  • By 2006 the natural care product industry is projected to reach  $7.5 billion in the United States
  • In 2003 34.4% of the population was using aromatherapy, of those 46.9% were under 35 years of age
  • The major producers of essential oils are China, Brazil, US, Egypt, India, Mexico, Guatemala, and Indonesia
  • The consumers of essential oils are the US, 40%, Western Europe, 30%, Japan 7%
  • Ten major crops comprise 80% of the world market for essential oil, some of them are: citrus oils ,mint oils, lemon fragrance oils, eucalyptus oils, cedarwood oil, clove oil
  • The remaining 20% is comprised of more than 150 plants

Obviously the market is growing, in fact with the nearly 47% under 35 crowd, if they continue using aromatherapy, older people will start making up a significant portion of the market. The entire personal care industry is highly profitable and as long as we help keep aroma therapist dealers honest, it will be a wonderful statistic.

We can’t emphasis enough the care you should take when you purchase essential oils for any type of therapeutic use. The majority of what you’ll find on the market are made for their perfume qualities rather than purity. That’s fine if you just like the scent and don’t expect any holistic benefit. We will devote a full chapter on scented aromatherapy candles, which in fact can be harmful if made from the wrong ingredients. Even if you experiment with aromatherapy baths, massage, and inhalation, carefully research where the plants were grown, how the oils were extracted, and what if anything was added to the formulation.

Medical Point-of-View

Medical aromatherapy treats specific diagnoses and must be administered by a licensed physician or naturopath who is trained specifically to practice aromatherapy. Treatment can be in the form of massage or even oral ingestion of essential oil capsules. Practitioners should have a minimum of four years of training. Inhalation is another way of introducing essential oils into the system.

Like many natural medicines, aromatherapy is not going to cure anyone of a disease or prevent cancer. It is more likely to ease symptoms and make the patient feel better.

Text Box: Mint is one of the most popular of all essential oils.
