The Pleasures of Safe Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy Guide Image

A very painful condition that millions of people suffer is called fibromyalgia. It causes every muscle in the body to hurt. Holistic-online recommends the following aromatherapy treatment to help relieve symptoms:

  • Basil, black pepper, elemi, eucalyptus, myrrh, peppermint, and pine in massage or bath
  • Juniper or rosemary oil in a warm 30-minute bath, followed by one hour of rest
  • Rub sore muscles with tea tree oil everyday
  • Massage the most painful muscles and joints with juniper oil
  • Reduce stress with elemi, frankincense, geranium, jasmine, lavender, myrrh, neroli

Remember to use any oils that contact the skin directly with carrier oil and talk to your doctor about what you are using. You have the right to choose your preferred treatment, but your physician should be aware in case you do suffer any adverse reactions.

There are of course hundreds of ailments for which you can try aromatherapy. The examples here are just a small number of some of the more common.

This next list of essential oils and properties, also taken from holistic-online have to do with migraine headaches and some of the side effects attributed to them:

  • Chamomile for worry, stress, anger, and feeling hyper
  • Rosemary, peppermint for severe and sharp pain, lethargy and feeling despondent
  • Lemon for milder pain and lethargy
  • Eucalyptus for colds and sinus problems
  • Sweet marjoram, melissa for overwork and hyper-activity

They recommend facial massage with 10 drops of rosemary per ounce of carrier oil and a few drops in a diffuser. Of course you should know ahead of time if the delicate skin of your face can tolerate the oils.

Breathing Essential Oils

The argument can be made that any use of aromatherapy uses inhalation since it’s all about the aroma of the essential oils. Even in a bath or massage, the fumes still enter our breathing system. These methods are considered direct inhalation since the oils make contact with the skin.

Indirect inhalation refers to releasing the essence into the air anyone in the room is breathing. Ancient history shows that indirect inhalation was used for centuries when it was burned for various rituals and the fumes were inhaled.
